Project Description:
Imagine having two very different 'telescopes' on your computer screen: one that sees how galaxy shapes are distorted by gravity, and another that listens to the faint 21cm radio glow of neutral hydrogen gas. This project is about making these two views talk to each other. We’ll use realistic simulations to see how neutral hydrogen can help you spot when galaxies are fooling us by lining up in the same direction, instead of being lensed by gravity. By building and testing this calibration method, we’re essentially letting one part of the Universe help us calibrate another.
Research Area:
Astrophysics
Project Level:
Masters
This Project Is Offered At The Following Node(s):
(UCT)(UKZN)(NWU)
Special Requirements:
Basic familiarity with Python or C/C++ will be very useful, since we'll spend a fair amount of time working with code and data.
