Project Description:
The project will involve using cutting edge SALT integral field unit (IFU) data and the latest HI data from MeerKAT nearby galaxy surveys to study the gas kinematics, interstellar medium (ISM) and star formation in nearby galaxies. This will be done in order to better understand the relationship between the gas kinematics and star formation, and the flow of gas in and out of galaxies. This is crucial for understanding galaxy evolution and how star forming galaxies can be turned into red galaxies that are no longer forming stars. This project is very flexible depending on the student's strengths and interests, and will allow the student to work with cutting edge SALT and MeerKAT data; and the project can easily be expanded into a Masters project that will invovle being a part of international collaborations.
